The Twelve Step programme

The Twelve Steps are at the centre of AA’s approach to recovery. They begin with recognising that alcohol has become unmanageable and accepting help. Members work on their own behaviour, make amends for harm where appropriate, and put the principles into practice in everyday life.

Meetings, AA literature and support from a sponsor can help members work through the Steps. A sponsor is another AA member who shares their experience of the programme. Helping other alcoholics is also part of the approach.

The Steps refer to God and a higher power. AA explains that members can understand that power in their own way, including through the support of the group. Newcomers can attend meetings even if they are unsure about the Steps.

Who is AA for?

AA is for people who want to stop drinking and stay stopped. Members support one another by sharing their experience of alcoholism and recovery. You can ask for help while you are still drinking.

There are no membership fees. Groups support themselves through voluntary contributions. AA welcomes people from all backgrounds and places importance on members’ anonymity.

If you are dependent on alcohol

AA offers recovery support. Alcohol withdrawal needs medical advice. If you drink heavily every day, shake or feel ill without alcohol, or have had withdrawal before, do not suddenly stop without medical advice. Withdrawal can be dangerous and can be fatal.
