Alcohol Dependence can make you feel Alone
Alcohol Abuse can ruin relationships

Emotional and Behavioural Changes Caused by Alcohol.

Acohol abuse causes terrible suffering, not only physically and mentally but also emotionally. Whether individuals accept they have a problem or not, their addiction causes them emotional upheaval while they are drinking, while they are sobering up and when they are suffering from alcohol withdrawal.

Drinking alcohol affects the body and brain and leads to confused, dangerous and disturbing emotional turmoil. This is a result of the alcohol interfering with neurotransmitters (messengers) in the brain.

The emotional consequences of alcohol abuse are widespread, affecting not only the individual but family, friends, colleagues and other contacts.

Short-Term Emotional Effects

Mood swings: Alcohol disrupts neurotransmitters like GABA and serotonin, leading to rapid shifts between euphoria, irritability, and sadness.

Lowered inhibitions: This can result in impulsive decisions, emotional outbursts, or saying things one might regret.

Temporary relief: Some people feel relaxed or confident while drinking, but this is fleeting and often followed by a crash.

Long-Term Emotional Consequences

Depression and anxiety: Chronic alcohol use can deplete brain chemicals that regulate mood, increasing the risk of persistent depression and anxiety2.

Emotional numbness: Over time, individuals may feel emotionally flat or disconnected from others and themselves.

Increased aggression: Alcohol can impair emotional regulation, leading to irritability, anger, or even violence3.

Shame and guilt: Many people struggling with alcoholism experience deep regret over their behavior, which can fuel a cycle of drinking to escape those feelings.

Impact on Relationships

Trust issues: Unpredictable behavior and broken promises can erode trust with loved ones.

Communication breakdown: Alcohol impairs the ability to express emotions clearly, often leading to misunderstandings and conflict.
