Get help to stop safely

If you drink heavily every day, get shakes or feel ill without alcohol, or have had withdrawal before, do not suddenly stop or sharply reduce your drinking without medical advice. Alcohol withdrawal can be fatal.

Seizures, hallucinations, severe confusion, severe shaking, collapse or serious deterioration: call 999 now. Do not drive yourself.

Make the call

Contact your GP or your alcohol service if you already have one.

“I need help to stop drinking safely. I’m frightened I cannot do it on my own.”

Tell them when you last drank, any symptoms you have, and whether you have had withdrawal seizures or delirium tremens before. You do not need to prepare everything before calling.

If you need urgent medical help and your GP is closed, call NHS 24 on 111.
