Al-Anon Family Groups is a worldwide fellowship that offers support to families and friends of alcoholics, helping them cope with the impact of a loved one’s drinking. In Scotland, and globally, Al-Anon provides the following for families of alcoholics:

Al-Anon runs regular meetings (in-person, online, or by phone) where family members and friends of alcoholics share experiences, strength, and hope. These groups provide a safe, non-judgmental space to discuss challenges, reduce isolation, and learn coping strategies. Meetings in Scotland are available in various locations, and online meetings cater to those who cannot attend in person.

Al-Anon helps families process emotions like guilt, anger, or shame caused by a loved one’s alcoholism. Members learn to focus on their own well-being, regardless of whether the alcoholic is still drinking or seeking recovery.

Al-Anon offers a spiritual (non-religious) framework based on the Twelve Steps, adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). This program guides families toward personal recovery, helping them regain control over their lives and find peace.

Al-Anon provides resources and literature (e.g., books like How Al-Anon Works or Courage to Change) to help families understand alcoholism as a disease, set boundaries, and avoid enabling behaviors. This education empowers families to detach with love and prioritize their mental health.

Meetings ensure anonymity, allowing members to share openly without fear of stigma. This fosters trust and a sense of community among those affected by a loved one’s drinking.
