Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs (SFAD) is a national charity in Scotland that provides support to anyone affected by a loved one’s alcohol or drug use, including families of alcoholics.

SFAD operates a free and confidential helpline (08080 10 10 11, Monday to Friday, 9am to 11pm, with a call-back service on weekends) offering listening support, advice, and information. Family members can discuss their concerns, learn about alcohol use, and explore ways to cope. Email support is also available at helpline@sfad.org.uk, and a webchat service is provided on their website.

SFAD offers both one-to-one and group support in areas like Aberdeenshire, East Dunbartonshire, Fife, Forth Valley, and Inverclyde. For those outside these areas, SFAD connects families to local support services across Scotland’s 32 council areas. These services focus on improving confidence, communication, and general well-being.

SFAD provides specialized support for families bereaved due to alcohol-related issues, offering counseling and emotional support to help cope with loss.

The charity offers one-to-one telehealth support and a befriending service, where volunteers provide regular online or phone-based support to reduce isolation and offer emotional guidance.

For more information on all the services SFAD provide you can contact them directly via their helpline, email, or website
